Young Children, Rules, and Compassion

August 20th, 2013

One of my favorite quotes about young children is from a National Association for Young Children (NAEYC) brochure about developmentally-appropriate practices: “Young children do not always understand and remember the rules.” I wish I had a neon sign in my office that said “Young children do not always understand and remember the rules.” And it is also true that we adults do not always understand and remember that young children do not always understand and remember the rules.

When we can remember this, it helps us come to challenging situations with compassion. I truly believe that this child is being their best self at this moment in time and I believe that every parent is doing the best that they can at any given moment. We are all in this together, doing the best we can. When we come with compassion, we can more easily partner with our children and find helpful solutions and strengthen our relationship with our child.
