Self Esteem

Never Too Much Self-Esteem

January 14th, 2014

When my daughter was 4 years old, she drew a dot on a page and was ecstatic about how beautiful her drawing was. I (the worried mother) became concerned that my daughter thought too highly of herself and had “too much self-esteem.” Everything that she did and said she thought was absolutely THE BEST!

I talked to my daughter’s preschool teacher (and my mentor) about this. Her response has stayed with me for decades: “Life is challenging. There will be many people and many times that she will be knocked down. She needs to think as highly of herself as she can so that she can weather these blows. She needs to be able to handle everything that life throws at her. Strong self-esteem is essential for survival and for a good life.”
