Eye Contact?

June 25th, 2013

Sometimes with young children we insist on their eye contact when we are talking. And sometimes when they don’t have eye contact we don’t think they are listening. But some children are auditory learners (learn through listening) and they are looking away so that they can turn their ear toward us to hear and process better. Also, some children find eye contact very stimulating and have a harder time focusing on what is said when they are looking at us.

We need to be less demanding about eye contact when communicating with a young child—respecting that they are listening in ways that are most helpful to them.
