A Good Enough Parent

December 24th, 2013

When my children were little, a friend gave me a holiday gift book. It was “A Good Enough Parent” by Bruno Bettelheim. I never read the book (I just didn’t have time to read books when I was raising a family!) but the title of the book was enough for me.

As a mother and a person who always felt that I wasn’t doing enough and that I wasn’t doing it right, it was a relief to know that I didn’t have to be a perfect parent. I could lower the bar. I could relax more into my role and accept my mistakes (at least what I considered mistakes). What a relief to know that being “good enough” was just fine! There were many challenging parenting times when I could accept that “good enough” was “good enough!” Love that book title!
